The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a series of raids in 16 places in Tamil Nadu as part of an ISIS radicalisation case, it said Tuesday. The operations, which started early Tuesday morning, are based on specific intelligence. According to sources involved in the investigation, authorities are targeting hideouts of people suspected of spreading ISIS ideology or recruiting new members to the terror group.

This is part of a slew of actions by the NIA to combat radicalization and recruitment by ISIS across India, which have been an increasing cause of worry for several states. The raids are designed to gather vital evidence against networks of people who spread extremist ideologies. It’s part of a newly registered case from last year that focuses particularly on ISIS supporters whose activities were uncovered in a previous probe.

The fresh case comes after three individuals were arrested on October 21 last year over their alleged links to an ISIS-inspired car bomb blast in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, in 2022. The arrested suspects, according to the NIA, were found to be involved in financing the terror attack. Meanwhile, four others out of the 11 were arrested on an offshoot case pertaining to radicalization activities and have been charge sheeted by the NIA. They are accused of advocating extremist views and a push to recruit people into ISIS, following the agency’s continued crackdown on terror networks in the area.

The raids are part of a relentless NIA drive against ISIS linked groups and their sympathizers in a bid to bring to an end such threats and prevent any acts of terrorism in the future.
