The National Commission For Women (NCW) on Thursday strongly condemned online rape and threats of death to social media influencer Apoorva Mukhija and sought immediate action against the culprits. However, after Mukhija made an appearance on the controversial web show India’s Got Latent on Instagram, the Commission took suo motu cognizance of abusive messages that were circulating across the platform and other social media platforms.

The NCW called the threats ‘despicable’ and said that no woman should be unsafe either in the public or the digital area. The Commission stated in a statement: “Issuing of threats of sexual violence or of death are very dangerous and should be treated severely, and law enforcement authorities should identify and prosecute those enemies of peace who have issued them.”

It made a formal move by writing to Maharashtra Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma requesting a swift and proper investigation into the matter. The Commission has also asked the governments of the groups concerned to determine the details, take action in three days, and report back. It also asked authorities to offer Mukhija the necessary support and security, given that she has been exposed to odious online abuse.

This incident follows another row involving Mukhija and fellow influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, who were called out by the NCW earlier this month. This came after he made derogatory and vulgar remarks during a segment of India’s Got Latent, which was hosted by comedian Samay Raina. Both influencers showed up to the Commission and recognised what they said was wrong, with Mukhija offering an official apology for her remarks.

In recent weeks her apology has not proved enough to stop the online threats, which led the NCW to take action. The Commission reiterated its commitment to protect and empower women online and offline and hold accountable those guilty of abusive behaviour.
