The Indian Navy on Monday took the lead with commissioning of INS Mahe, the first ship in a fleet of Mahe-class of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) shallow-water ships that has provided a massive boost to the Indian sea defence systems. This new-generation platform will be the front line of the near seas defence that will work in coordination with the larger ships, submarines and aviation resources to ensure round the clock maritime surveillance.
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi who was the chief guest at the ceremony emphasised the fact that the commissioning of INS Mahe has been a testimony of the power of the indigenous defence production ecosystem in India. According to him, the ship is a new type of smooth and fast shallow-water combatants and is completely conceived, designed, and built in India. The induction, he said, highlights the dynamic nature of the Navy as a builder-navy, and able to make and sustain its own advanced platforms.
The Navy states that the presence of INS Mahe would help the country in a great way dominate the littoral waters, reinforce the coastal security grid, and defend maritime interests in the extensive near-sea territories of the country. Technological prowess The commissioning of the ship is also a renewal of the technological ability of India to design and deploy complex naval fighting ships on its own, under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat program.
In an uncommon event, an Army Chief was present at a Commissioning of a Navy ship that indicated an increasing amount of synergy between the armed forces. After the service, Gen Dwivedi awarded the Chief of Army Staff Commendation to the Navy members who were involved in the commissioning of the vessel into service. He stressed the growing involvement of the Navy in the regional and global theatres and called such inter-service collaboration as smart diplomacy, in which the presence of the Army can be complementary to the efforts of the Navy to project both soft and hard power.
INS Mahe is the first ship of an eight ship fleet designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited. Although small in size the ship packs powerful capabilities, it is a combination of stealth, speed, and endurance.
