New Delhi: Narendra Modi will today take oath as the Prime Minister of India at a mega event in the national capital.
Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi who is set to be sworn in for a third straight term this evening started the day by paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi. Along with his council of ministers, he will take oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan at 7.15 pm today as the head of a coalition government after two full tenures, wherein the BJP enjoyed a majority on its own. Modi has likened his third consecutive term in office to the monumental record set by former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru who won in 1952, 1957 and 1962 general elections.
Leaders from India’s neighbourhood and the Indian Ocean Region are among the dignitaries and special invitees expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. While principal opposition Congress has said that its leaders are yet to receive invitations for the ceremony, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee announced that her party would not attend the event.
Security has been beefed up in the national capital and special measures have also been arranged for leaders from the neighbourhood and Indian Ocean region attending the high-profile event. The swearing-in ceremony will be attended by over 8,000 guests, including various professionals and cultural performers.
After having run two successive governments with massive mandates, the Bharatiya Janata Party stalwart will become the head of a coalition government. A host of foreign dignitaries, including several heads of neighbouring countries, will attend Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
