Nagpur: Police in Nagpur in Maharashtra have stepped up efforts to catch gangsters involved in recent violence. Officials also said 18 special teams have been formed to identify and arrest culprits. The teams that make up these are composed of officers from Ganeshpeth, Kotwali, Tehsil police stations, and Crime Branch officers. Also, the police are collaborating with cyber cells to go through CCTV and retrieve digital evidence to implicate other suspects.

Some 69 people have been arrested in connection with the violence that started Monday. Of the 200 accused identified by the police, nearly 1,000 more have been traced on CCTV footage during the riots. Curfew continues for the third day in a row in various parts of Nagpur after the violence in its aftermath.

Five First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered, and 200 people have been named at Ganeshpeth and Kotwali police stations. Among them also is Fahim Khan, leader of the minority Democratic Party (MDP). Officials said that Khan, along with a group of 50 to 60 people, staged an unlawful protest outside the Ganeshpeth police station Monday. The protest was against another demonstration held by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) earlier.

After withdrawing from the protest, Khan and eight others went to Bhaldarpura, where about 500 to 600 people of a minority community had gathered close to Shivaji Maharaj Chowk. Shortly afterwards, Khan was arrested by police. Khan is a record accused of crimes of electricity theft and illegal protests in 2023 and 2024.

Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, police commissioner, has told people to believe and that all those responsible would be brought to justice, with special teams devoted to restoring peace in the city and ensuring it was safe.
