The next ambassador of India to Japan will be senior diplomat Nagma Mohamed Mallick, and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced this on Saturday. At present, she is the Indian Ambassador to Poland, but she will resume her duty soon.

The MEA statement announced that the next ambassador of India to Japan will be Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick (IFS: 1991), who is currently the ambassador of India in the Republic of Poland.

Mallick is an officer in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) of the 1991 batch and is one of the most successful diplomats in India, with more than thirty years of service in some of the most important global assignments. Her diplomatic career started in Paris with a position at the Embassy of India, France, and in the permanent mission of India to UNESCO.

In New Delhi, Mallick worked on various important posts, such as Desk Officer in the West Europe Division of MEA, a post in the Prime Minister’s office with PM I.K. Gujral, and was subsequently appointed the first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial).

She has served in foreign assignments with far reaching effects. She worked as a First Secretary in Nepal and a Counselor in Sri Lanka. She served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Thailand between 2010and 2012, then as the Ambassador to Tunisia (2012-2015) and as the High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam (2015-2018).

At home, she has worked as the Deputy Spokesperson of MEA, Director of the Eurasia Division responsible for foreign relations with Russia and CIS countries, and Head of the Policy Planning Division. She headed the Indian participation in Eastern and Southern African countries as Additional Secretary (Africa).

It is believed that her appointment to Tokyo is an important diplomacy step, as it has enhanced India-Japan strategic and economic relations, which is a close ally of New Delhi in the Indo-Pacific region.
