In a somber turn of events, maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, the soulful voice behind the iconic “Aaoge Jab Tum” from the film Jab We Met, breathed his last on Tuesday, January 9. The 55-year-old maestro had been battling prostate cancer, receiving treatment at a Kolkata hospital since December 2023, where he succumbed to the illness.

Initially treated at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Khan opted for continued care in Kolkata, reportedly responding positively to the treatment until recent days when his health deteriorated. Despite being on ventilator support, the maestro could not be saved, passing away at approximately 3:45 pm.

Throughout his hospitalization, Khan persisted with his musical practice, showcasing his unwavering dedication to his craft. The family is yet to issue an official statement regarding his demise.

A distinguished artist from the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, Ustad Rashid Khan was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2022, recognizing his invaluable contributions to Indian music. Additionally, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006.

Having made his debut concert appearance at the tender age of 11, Khan’s musical journey was marked by extraordinary talent and dedication. In Bollywood, his collaboration with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy produced memorable tracks, including “Allah Hi Reham” in My Name Is Khan.

The passing of Ustad Rashid Khan leaves a void in the world of music, and his legacy will be remembered through the timeless melodies he shared with audiences worldwide. The maestro’s influence extends beyond his Bollywood contributions, encompassing his broader impact on classical and contemporary Indian music.
