Mumbai: The latest report by the BMC reveals detection of variants of Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 from the new batch of samples sent for genome sequencing.
Around four patients from Kasturba Hospital have been identified to be infected with new strains of the potentially virulent Omicron. One of the four is infected with BA.5 while the other three report infection due to BA.4.
According to the report, all these patients were found to be positive between 14th May to 24th May 2022, out of which two are 11-year-old girls and two are males in age group of 40-60 years.
Maharashtra reported its first cases of the COVID-19 infection with BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of the Omicron strain of the virus in at least seven cases in Pune.
India had reported the first case of BA.4 sub-variant from Hyderabad earlier and later the Indian SARS-CoV2 Genomics Consortium had confirmed the detection of cases with BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants in Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
