A Mumbai Police team went to a studio in the Khar area of Mumbai on Monday to investigate a complaint after a controversy that arose from a remark made during the filming of India’s Got Latent show. The dispute was sparked after Ranveer Allahbadia, a YouTuber, made some comments during his guest appearance on the show that caused a public backlash.
The police investigated the show after a legal complaint was made against Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, and the show’s producers. The complaint, which was made to the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, demanded that abusive language used in the show be investigated and those responsible be dealt with accordingly. In response to the controversy, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis admitted the issue but said he had not yet had a chance to watch the episode.
“Some things have been said and done the wrong way,” he remarked. He continued, “People are entitled to free speech, but this right comes with the condition that they do not offend others. We have rules in society and anyone who breaches them must be arrested. Those at the top must be held accountable.” Former National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson and Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma came out strongly against the remarks made.
Expressing her shock, she said: “The video is very disturbing. It does not matter who the target is; there is no place for such humour in society. This is because jokes about a mother or a woman’s body are evidence of the unfortunate moral incompetence of today’s you.” The controversy has left many people on social media platforms discussing the limits of humour and the social responsibilities of content creators.
