Dr Amra Ram, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP, was allegedly denied permission to visit a jailed Ladakhi activist, Sonam Wangchuk, at Jodhpur Central Jail, prompting him to issue a strident condemnation of the government. The MP, Sikar, in the Lok Sabha, asserted that he would like to meet Wangchuk and know the terms of his detention, but was prevented by police barricades outside the facility on Tuesday evening.

Amra Ram replied to the jail superintendent that he had written formally requesting a meeting. The administration, however, declined the request, citing jail procedures and security restrictions. He has insisted that the government explain the circumstances in which such a meeting can be held, particularly among a representative of the electorate.

Sonam Wangchuk was taken into custody after violent demonstrations in Ladakh broke out during his hunger strike on September 24. He has been charged with the National Security Act (NSA) and moved to the Jodhpur Central Jail. Wangchuk has remained a resounding voice of the movement in Ladakh that seeks statehood and addition to the Sixth Schedule to protect the local rights, land and resources.

Talking to journalists outside the jail, Amra Ram stated that the central government was not keeping its promises to the people of Ladakh. He claimed that the administration did not engage in dialogue but instead repressed the demonstrators by shooting at them and incarcerating their leader. The word has not been kept with Ladakh. The government has imprisoned Sonam Wangchuk instead of dealing with the grievances, he said.

Ever since Wangchuk was admitted to the Jodhpur jail, security has been tightened. There are several barricades on the road to the main gate, and police officers are positioned on them. Travel in the region is strictly policed, and people are pulled over and interrogated without fail.
