New Delhi: Amidst scoring global uproar on Hijab row in Karnataka, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that motivated comments on the situation were not welcomed. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of the realities.
“A matter regarding dress code in some educational institutions in the State of Karnataka is under judicial examination by the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka. Our constitutional framework and mechanisms, as well as our democratic ethos and polity, are the context in which issues are considered and resolved- his statement on Twitter read.
The remark came after the Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, criticized the incidents occurring in Karnataka. The IRF is a US govt body that monitors and reports on religious freedom. Rashad Hussain, the Ambassador tweeted- hijab bans in schools violate religious freedom.
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is a U.S. federal government commission created by the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998. USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the President and the leadership of both political parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives. USCIRF’s principal responsibilities are to review the facts and circumstances of violations of religious freedom internationally and to make policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and Congress.
Objection against Hijab has been gaining political mileage since December, last year when a group of six with Hijab were not allowed to attend classes in a Govt college in Karnataka.
