On Saturday, three cases were registered against the Mumbai comedian Kunal Kamra at the Khar police station in west Mumbai for his obscene act, plunging him deeper into legal trouble. The complaints were prompted by his controversial stand-up comedy routines that had sarcastic comments about Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.

The complainants include the Mayor of Jalgaon City, and another two complaints have been registered by a hotelier and a businessman of Nashik, as quoted by the Mumbai Police. Sources say Kamra has been summoned by the Khar police on two different occasions but has not appeared for investigation as of yet.

Kamra gets interim relief from court

However, on Friday, the Madras High Court granted the comedian interim anticipatory bail in several FIRs registered against him. Presiding over the case, Justice Sunder Mohan ordered Kamra to be protected from arrest till April 7, provided certain conditions were met.

Kamra approached the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail based on the fears regarding the brunt of the numerous threats he has faced since his recent satirical commentary. The complaints pile up against him; his lawyers said that it could amount to harassment and even ultimate arrest.

Repeated Summons from Mumbai Police

Kunal Kamra was asked by the Mumbai Police to appear for Rsistencing at the Khar police station on March 31, but the Mumbai police had already issued a summons to Kamra. It is the third notice to the comedian after Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel accused him of hurting Hindu sentiments with the content of his new show. In response, the last two summons given to Kamra have gone unanswered, and the legal proceedings towards him are getting even more escalated.

The cases against him mount, and it will be interesting to see how Kamra will play his legal battle while fighting his right to free speech and satire.
