Conditions of severe monsoons are being experienced in India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing various rain warnings in the northern states in the north. The weather is presently on yellow alert of heavy rain and thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in six Himachal Pradesh districts, Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, Bilaspur, Shimla and Sirgaon, and two Punjab districts, Gurdaspur and Pathankot. These are issued as northern India is still facing a fierce monsoon rage which has impacted the normal lives of people and caused a lot of infrastructure damage.

The IMD also predicts a reduction in the rainfall activity in Jammu and Kashmir today, with isolated heavy rainfall spells in the next six to seven days in northwestern India. Besides, western Rajasthan will receive heavy rain between August 29 and 31 and Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh will receive heavy rain between September 1 and 2. In the next week, over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad are likely to be overcast skies with strong winds that will cause concerns about additional flooding and damage.

Disasters due to rain have already taken their toll, and the number of deaths in Jammu and Kashmir has already hit 41, with Himachal Pradesh reporting more than 300 deaths due to endless rainfall and related accidents. The unending heavy rainfall has also caused some of the major highways to close, which has affected movement and transportation.

Among the most intense effects of such downpour was witnessed at the historic Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan, which was on Wednesday morning engulfed in floods. The Ranjit Sagar Dam in the Pathankot district had to discharge surplus water, and the result was that the Ravi river flooded the gurdwara first time since the Kartarpur Corridor was inaugurated in 2019. Such massive flooding highlights the intensity of this year-round monsoon, and it directs the increasing problems with extreme weather events in the area.

The situation requires increased readiness and attention due to the fact that authorities are monitoring the levels of rivers, controlling the release of water, and ensuring the safety of the residents in affected states.
