NEW DELHI: The eagerly anticipated Southwest Monsoon has made its early arrival over Kerala, commencing on Saturday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed. This year’s onset, occurring significantly earlier than the usual June 1 date, marks the earliest for the Indian mainland since May 23, 2009, according to IMD data.
The early arrival of the monsoon is a welcome development, holding crucial implications for India’s agrarian economy. The lifegiving rains are vital for sowing of Kharif crops, impacting food security and rural livelihoods across the vast agricultural belt. IMD officials stated that all necessary conditions for the monsoon’s onset, including sufficient rainfall over Kerala, westerly winds, and out-of-season clouding, have been met.
While the normal onset date is June 1, slight variations are common. This year’s record-breaking early arrival suggests favourable atmospheric conditions over the Arabian Sea. The IMD will now monitor its further progression across the subcontinent, with attention turning to how swiftly it advances northward and its distribution across key farming states. The early start in Kerala often sets a positive tone, though the overall performance and distribution across the country will be keenly observed in the coming weeks as millions of farmers depend on its timely and adequate spread.
