The main suspect in the case of gang-rape of a 24 year old student in South Calcutta Law College is a faculty member named Monojit Mishra of the college, who was hired as an ad-hoc faculty member in the college itself just 45 days before the incident occurred in which the unfortunate student was raped horribly by the main accused together with a group of other students. Mishra, two others, Zib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, have been arrested and remanded to police custody till July 1.
As per Vice-Principal Nayna Chatterji, Mishra was taken in as a contract worker after the college governing body made the decision. She said it was on the instructions of the governing body of the college that Mishra was recruited purely as a contract employee about 45 days back. The senior-most member of the governing body is Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Ashok Kumar Deb.
But TMC MLA Ashok Kumar Deb has dissociated himself with the decision, as he said that though he is the president of the governing body, he has not suggested the appointment of Mishra. “I did not recommend the name of Mishra. It was a unified move of the administration arm. Lots of individuals pose with me, what do they do privately?” When asked about pictures circulating that he was present with the accused, Deb responded with, “Pictures!”
A deeper search has unearthed the fact that 31-year-old Monojit Mishra is nothing new to the law enforcers. He is said to have been charged with a number of past incidents of a grave nature, including sexual harassment, assault, vandalism and petty theft.
The supposed gang-rape was set on the 25th day of June, on a Monday night between 7.30 pm and 10:50 pm, in which the then-victim had visited the college premises to complete some forms relating to the exams. The case has led to huge popular protests and political uproar in West Bengal, with opposition BJP alleging that the ruling TMC is protecting criminals, something that the party strongly repudiates.
