Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet on August 31 in China during the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. This summit is almost one year following their last meeting in October of the previous year, which had been a breakthrough in the talks between the two nations in order to find a solution to the current military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The meeting to be held in the future will only enhance communication and cooperation between the two Asian giants.
In the context of the SCO Summit, PM Modi is also likely to conduct negotiations with the Russian President Vladimir Putin and a number of Central Asian leaders, and the subject of regional security, economic cooperation, and multilateral interactions within the framework of the SCO. The summit will also offer a significant avenue through which India will be able to cement its strategic interests while strengthening its diplomatic relations with some of the major players in the region.
Visiting China was the first time in five years, since the bilateral relations started to worsen in 2020, that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had seen President Xi Jinping during the recent visit last month. In this visit, Jaishankar delivered the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi to Xi Jinping and the developments of bilateral relations. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of both leaders to provide guidance on the relationship in the right direction.
Since the 2020 border tussle, India-China ties have been sour, but in recent months have been displaying signs of normalcy. Some serious measures have been taken, such as the reinstatement of direct flights between the two nations. Moreover, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conducted negotiations with the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to ease visa procedures of tourists, business travellers, media and other visitors. These measures demonstrate the new interest among both parties to cooperate and to develop a partnership in several areas.
