Speaking at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meet held in Delhi on Thursday, the alliance unanimously gave powers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president J.P. Nadda to decide the common candidate that the alliance should support as the next Vice President of India after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju briefed the media on the move and said the ruling bloc had enjoyed complete faith in Modi and Nadda to take the final call.

The move occurred after members of the NDA top leadership met at the Parliament complex at a high level. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the meeting, which was attended by a number of other senior leaders and allies of the BJP. Some of them included Union Home Minister Amit Shah, JD(U) leader Lalan Singh, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MP Shrikant Shinde, TDP representative Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan.

The subject matter of the meeting was said to be on the preservation of alliance unity and the quick determination of a consensus candidate that could easily win the imminent vice presidential election. The untimely departure of Dhankhar has put the selection process into high gear, and the leaders of the NDA partners will have to seek speedy coordination.

Since the Change in the Central leadership and because Prime minister Modi and JP Nadda have now been granted the authority to select the candidate, it has been suggested that negotiations are on going in an endeavour to settle on a candidate who would portray the greater political plan and social outreach that the NDA intends to create in anticipation of upcoming state elections.

The leadership has said very little, although there is speculation on who could be the next candidates. The Election Commission will announce the schedule of the elections soon. It is most likely that after the nomination, the candidate who is NDA is expected to win as the alliance has a majority in Parliament.

This appointment is especially significant because the Vice President of India also happens to be the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, which therefore makes him an important, strategically located appointment to the smooth running of Parliament in the forthcoming months.
