Narendra Modi visited Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur for the first time since becoming prime minister in 2014. RSS has been celebrating its centenary, and his visit relieved any apprehension about any split within the BJP and its ideological parent.

Modi is only the second sitting host after Atal Bihari Vajpayee to visit the RSS headquarters. In fact, both Vajpayee and Modi made their visits on their third terms of office in 2000 and 2024, respectively. This visit follows Modi’s last trip to the RSS administrative headquarters in 2013 while Chief Minister of Gujarat.

PM Modi paid homage to RSS’s founding fathers when he paid a visit to the Dr Hedgewar Smruti Mandir. He also lifted the foundation stone of the new extension of Madhav Netralaya Eye Institute & Research Centre, named after former RSS chief Madhavrao Golwalkar, which will be called Madhav Netralaya Premium Centre.

Addressing the event, Modi said the RSS is the ‘modern Akshay Vat (banyan tree) of India’s immortal culture and its principles and ideals are the base of it in which lakhs of volunteers are engaged as branches of this tree’. He noted that the Sangh is important in continuously energizing Indian culture and national consciousness.

Modi took a dig at the careless behavior of the world over time and shared RSS volunteers’ praise for their selfless service at different times in various sectors, accompanied by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. All acknowledged their contributions in the fields of education, health, and social welfare, indicating that the organization made its mark in the cultural and social fabric of India.

Modi’s visit was to reaffirm the deep ties of the BJP and the RSS and the latter’s continued importance in the shaping of modern India.
