Aizwal: Voting for the assembly elections held in Mizoram (Mizoram Assembly Election 2023) was held on 7th November and counting of votes is taking place today i.e. on 4th December. Strict security arrangements have been made.
Let us tell you that the results of Mizoram along with the five states were to be declared on December 3, but the Election Commission took a big decision and changed the date of election results in Mizoram.
CM Zoramthanga’s MNF is in power in Mizoram, a state with 40 assembly seats. At the same time, there is a huge wave in favor of ZPM (Zoram People’s Movement) led by 74-year-old former IPS officer “Lalduhoma”. There is a tough contest on 40 assembly seats between Mizo National Front, Zoram People’s Movement, Congress and BJP. Now it has to be seen who gets the crown.
The 2023 Mizoram Assembly elections were a historic event, not just for the record-breaking 80.66% voter turnout, but for the tight race it unfolded. The incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF), led by the popular Chief Minister Zoramthanga, faced a strong challenge from the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), a young party with a fresh vision. The Congress, once the dominant force, aimed for a comeback, while the BJP hoped to gain a foothold in the Christian-majority state.
The MNF campaigned on its strong leadership, development record, and commitment to Mizo identity. The ZPM, led by former Chief Minister Lalduhoma Rongbawl, promised change, better infrastructure, and a focus on youth issues. The Congress, plagued by internal divisions, struggled to offer a clear alternative.
The BJP, despite contesting only 23 seats, aimed to capitalize on Hindu nationalism and its perceived influence on the national government. However, its limited presence and the MNF’s strong hold on the tribal vote base made it a tough climb. As counting began on December 4th, a tense atmosphere gripped the state.
