The Nashik police could not arrest the former minister of Maharashtra, Manikrao Kokate, on Thursday, after doctors at the Lilavati Hospital of Mumbai told the authorities that the former minister was ill and would have a coronary angiography done on Friday evening. According to police officials, they would await a completion of the medical procedure on which to take any further action.

This statement of Dr Kuldeep, the head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Lilavati Hospital, bandra West was recorded by a Nashik police team on Thursday night. Senior Inspector Anchal Mudgal of the Nashik police crime branch assured that the arrest could be called off until the angiography of Kokate is completed and his medical condition is checked.

Recently, Maharashtra Council of Ministers resigned following the insistence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that Kokate could not serve in the council considering his conviction and a warrant against him issued by court at Nashik. After this Kokate announced his resignation to Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar on Thursday.

The attack on the former minister has also taken him to the Bombay High Court seeking refuge and his case is set to be heard on Friday afternoon.

Kokate had been taken to Lilavati Hospital on Wednesday complaining of high blood pressure and heart rate that was elevated. According to the sources in the hospital he got a CT angiography on Thursday that showed he had heavy calcium deposits and thus he was suspected of having blockages. He is under the treatment of the cardiologist Dr Suresh Vijan and senior pulmonologist Dr Jalil Parkar.

Manikrao Kokate and his brother Vijay Kokate had been convicted of a 1995 case of cheating and forgery. They were convicted by the court of having acquired two flats in one of the prime locations in Nashik by forged documents and hence illegally.
