Andhra Pradesh has recorded the maximum toll of deaths this year in the monsoon season as a result of heavy rainfall and floods. Andhra Pradesh has recorded 258 deaths since April 1, and until July 16, the data provided by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday revealed. Himachal Pradesh was next in the list with 171 deaths in the given time period, and Madhya Pradesh and Bihar reported 148 and 101 deaths, respectively, indicating the extent of destruction severe climatic conditions had on various states.
There was also a lot of damage to property and livestock noted by the ministry. In Himachal Pradesh, 23,818 cows and 1,528 households were lost, whereas in Madhya Pradesh, 325 heads of cattle had lost their lives, with 986 houses destroyed. Assam had the highest distress to farming land, and more than 29,700 hectares of cultivable land were submerged due to floods.
The government formed an inter-Ministerial central team (IMCT) of Himachal Pradesh to evaluate and organize relief operations. Such a team will move into areas that are affected to assess the damage costs of flash floods, cloud bursts, and landslides even before official memorandums are issued by the state.
These details were given by Nityanand Rai, the minister of state, home affairs, as a reply to queries put forward by the BJP and Shiv Sena MPs associated with the questions of losses due to monsoon. The ministry recorded that there were early incidents of floods caused by heavy rainfall that occurred over central and western India, Gujarat, and Rajasthan due to favorable synoptic systems and monsoonal winds.
So far in the financial year till July 15, 2025, 22 states have received a total financial assistance of 9,578.40 crores by the central government under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The ministry explained that this assistance is supposed to offer relief and not loss compensation. The national policy on disaster management states that disaster management is the work of state governments.
