The Ministry of Home Affairs has declared Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar a designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Brar had claimed responsibility for the audacious murder of Indian rap star and Congress politician, Sidhu Moosewala.
Satinderjit Singh, popularly known as Goldy Brar, went to Canada in 2017 on a student visa. He has been running his criminal activities from there, including murders and extortion. He is a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
In an official notification, the Centre said Satwinder Singh alias Goldy Brar, the son of Shamsher Singh and Preetpal Kaur born on 11.04.1994, who presently lives in Canada’s Brampton, is associated with the pro-Khalistan terrorist group Babbar Khalsa.
Goldy Brar has gained notoriety for his alleged involvement in numerous criminal activities, including:
- Mastermind of Sidhu Moosewala’s Murder: Brar claimed responsibility for the shocking assassination of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022, sending shockwaves through India and the music world.
- Gangster Activity and Extortion: Brar is accused of heading a criminal gang involved in extortion, violence, and other illegal activities, primarily targeting Punjab and its diaspora.
- Links to Terrorism: The government alleges Brar’s association with the banned Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh separatist group designated as a terrorist organization.
This designation under UAPA empowers the Indian government to take several critical actions against Brar:
- Freezing Assets: All of Brar’s financial assets within India can be frozen, crippling his financial operations and limiting his ability to fund criminal activities.
- Travel Ban: Brar’s entry into India will be prohibited, further isolating him from his networks and operations within the country.
- International Cooperation: The UAPA designation strengthens India’s case for seeking Brar’s extradition from Canada through Interpol and diplomatic channels.
- Deterrent Effect: This move serves as a strong deterrent to other criminals operating from abroad, showcasing the Indian government’s resolve to crack down on transnational crime.
