The planner of the riotous affair of Lionel Messi visiting the Salt Lake stadium of Kolkata on Saturday, has been detained, after the bloody scenes that made West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologize. The arrest follows public protest among fans who had started complaining on short appearance of Messi whose presence was hardly noticeable by the visitors.
West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar held the view that the disturbance was brought about by confusion and frustration on the part of the fans. The fans were somewhat angry or anxious saying that he was not playing. He was to come here, shake hands with some people and go, he said. The government has now already formed a committee that is to investigate all facets of the incident.
It quickly became out of control at Yubha Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) as the fans threw bottles and chairs in protest after not being able to get a good view of Messi. The event was reportedly sold at a price as high as ₹4,000 and ₹25,000, which also contributed to disappointment of the people who spent plenty of money on the event.
Refunding of the tickets has been confirmed by the authorities with the organisers giving out written commitments in this respect. Further DGP (law and order) Jawed Shamim verified the arrest of the mastermind, and the filing of an FIR. The arrested person is reported by local media to be Satadru Dutta but this has not been confirmed by itself.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was unable to be at the event because of the commotion, said that she was shocked and remorseful at the event. She expressed certain regrets to the society and emphasized that the state government is also doing its part to make things accountable. According to the police officials, the situation is now in control and the lapses are being investigated.
