Top security officers in Meghalaya on Sunday firmly denied what they termed as cut-throat and counterfeit stories being aired in parts of the Bangladeshi mainstream media, pointing out that such stories stood a high chance of confusing the citizens and upsetting peace within the sensitive border state. With Bangladesh, Meghalaya is a state that frequents with cross-border crimes and security challenges, and its border with Bangladesh is long and permeable.

The Mumbai police headquarters official refuted allegations that two suspects in the murder of Osman Hadi Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh had entered India, illegally, through Bangladesh. Reports which indicated that the accused came in Meghalaya via Haluaghat border in Bangladesh Mymensingh district were totally false as indicated by the official.

A major Bangladeshi newspaper presented the accusations quoting the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Meghalaya Police however considered the report as untrue and altogether false and stated that there was no factual basis behind such claims.

The senior police official had not been informed through any formal or informal communication by the Bangladesh police about the alleged entry of these people. The accused posted in the report have not been tracked down at any part of the Garo Hills region and there are no arrests related to the case in Meghalaya either.

The report had also alleged that the accused had been assisted by local facilitators after they allegedly entered the border. It identified one of the persons named Purti who was reportedly given them on entry and the other person known as Sami who was claimed to be a taxi driver and reportedly took the suspects to Tura. Meghalaya Police did not accept these claims as reasonable and supported by any evidence.

The security agencies such as the border security force (BSF) are in a high alert and close coordination between the international border.
