Meerut: Recently, Muskan Rastogi’s lover, Sahil Shukla, accused in Saurabh Rajput murder, met Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut MP Arun Govil during his visit to Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail, where the former is lodged. Famous for having turned Lord Ram into an epic Ramayan on TV in the 1980s, Govil was at the jail as part of his initiative ‘Ghar Ghar Ramayan’, which is a campaign to propagate the teachings of epic East.
During this campaign, 1,500 copies of Ramayana were given to the inmates. Govil did not speak with the prisoners himself but said when informed by the media, both Muskan and Sahil had become emotional meeting him.
Addressing reporters, Govil stressed the power of the Ramayana’s teachings to transform prisoners’ lives, telling them to adopt the teachings of the Ramayana.
According to him, “The inmates had deep reverence for the Ramayana’. If even a fraction of its teaching are taken into action, society will experience change. It’s not enough to spread copies of it, we have to wear our understanding of its wisdom every moment of the day. But just if we took on 10 percent of its values, we can have an impact,” Govil said, according to the statement quoted by the reports.
As part of the ‘Ghar Ghar Ramayan’ campaign, he wants to distribute 11 lakh copies of the holy text across India. More than 11,000 copies have already been given out in the Meerut Hapur Lok Sabha constituency since the initiative started a month and a half back.
Govil’s visit, along with the Meerut murder accused’s emotive reaction, has ignited a debate on the part of spirituality and reform in prisons, asking basic questions like faith, redemption and justice in the criminal justice system.
