The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has warned to stay away of a fictional crowdfunding call circulating on social media in the name of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row in Yemen. On Tuesday, the ministry explained that there is no donation drive, sponsored by the government, to raise money for her case.
According to a post by the fact-checking unit of MEA, they have observed the claims made on social media to provide a monetary donation to a GoI designated bank account in the matter of the Nimisha Priya case. That is a bogus assertion.” The explanation was carried out following messages circulating online that state that 8.3 crore was being raised with government support.
Nimisha Priya (born 1984), a Kerala Indian nurse, 38, is on death row, sentenced to death by firing squad in Yemen because of murdering a 2017 Yemeni citizen in July 2017. It had been planned to execute her on July 16 this year, but this was delayed after the Indian officials intervened.
An evangelist has posted a video plea to the Houthi regime in July 2020 in the city of Sana, the capital city of Yemen. It also included the husband of Nimisha, Thomas and his 13-year-old daughter Mishel, who asked for mercy and help in getting Nimisha out.
Nimisha has been imprisoned in one of the Sanaa prisons, which is the area dominated by Iran-backed Houthis rebels. The Indian government has repeated its presence in the case. Last week, the MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, We are closely monitoring the situation and extending all possible support. There are also friendly governments we are communicating with on the matter.
The MEA has also asked people to be cautious about fraudulent campaigns based on the sensitive case. It emphasised that official information or news flash shall only be disseminated through authorised channels of the government.
