Lashing out at the Congress for the first time in the election campaign, BSP chief Mayawati on Saturday said that due to some mistake that the Congress has committed in the past, religious minorities in Bangladesh are undergoing tremendous pain today. She said that current increased aggression in India’s neighbour country has targeted more Hindus, including Dalits and other vulnerable groups.

Mayawati called upon the BJP led central government to wake up to the call and take appropriate steps to safeguard those disadvantaged sections of the society. “This is something that the weaker section of the society, Dalit community in particular must not go through. The Indian government has to impress the Bangladeshi authorities to resolve this problem or help these victims come back to India,” Mayawati said, according to news agency. She accused Congress of making these communities in the state to be where they are now today and called for urgent assistance to be provided to them.

Apart from political rivals, Mayawati condemned the Congress and the Samajwadi Party calling them two sides of the same coin. She claimed that the Congress has been indifferent to the issue and found its voice only for garnering Muslim votes. “The Congress now says ‘be careful’ but wakes up to the rights of the minorities in Bangladesh,” she said at a press briefing.

Her statements come at a time when violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has been on the rise and there are fears that the region is becoming volatile for people of certain minority groups. In this regard, India has said that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit Dhaka on December 9 to consult and meet with Bangladesh officials. This visit will focus on the bilateral matters such as the protection of religious minorities.

The remarks of Mayawati emphasize on the political and the humanitarian aspect of this issue, who called for both Indian and Bangladeshi governments to own up for the problem and do something urgently.
