The iconic marathon runner and global endurance and determination icon, Fauja Singh, died Monday, aged 114, after he was hit by an unknown vehicle in a hit-and-run case. According to Indian media, the accident happened in his hometown in the village of Bias in Jalandhar district of the Punjab at around 3.30 PM when he was having his daily walk.

Singh was taken directly to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where he later died in the process of treatment. His death was announced by the author Khushwant Singh, who is the author of The Turbaned Tornado, a biography that sums up the life and includes the sports story of Fauja Singh. “Now is my Turbaned Tornado dead. He was hit when he was crossing the road. My dear Fauja rest in peace,” Khushwant Singh wrote in X ( formerly Twitter), and sympathizers all over the world deeply mourned the loss of this exceptional person.

Adampur SHO Hardeep Singh said the son of the runner informed the adjoining police about the mishap, and this brought registration of the FIR. “Policemen have launched an investigation and are now trying to determine the car which has been involved in the incident. The vehicle is yet to be traced; however, we are carrying the leads and will soon make the accused arrested,” the SHO said. He added that Fauja Singh was walking on the main road when the tragedy took place.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his condolences to the family of the veteran athlete, mourning the loss of such an important person. “The life of Fauja Singh Ji was an epitome of perseverance and enthusiasm. Millions were inspired by him,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Fauja Singh, frequently hailed as having completed marathons in his 100s, leaves a legacy that cannot be aged, nor cultured, nor even put into boundaries, a fantastic example of human stamina and morale.
