Following US President Donald Trump’s claim that India has agreed to reduce tariffs under US pressure, a sharp attack was launched by the BJP-led central government on it by Congress leader and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari on Saturday. Tewari said that it was unfortunate and added that it was a poor reflection of India’s trade, strategic and foreign policy.

Tewari spoke to a news agency and pointed out how Trump has openly berated India’s tariff structure time and again, ‘describing India as a serial tariff abuser.’ In a new allegation that Trump made, India has now decided to cut tariffs because of US influence, he said, adding that Trump spoke multiple times about India in the State of the Union address.

If this be true, then it is extremely unfortunate because India has always and traditionally never buckled down under any pressure by any country. Tewari said it is not good trade policy, strategic policy or foreign policy.

Former Union Minister argued that the government should not have reduced the tariffs on foreign pressure but rather negotiated for reciprocal tariffs. He said it is much better to accept reciprocal tariffs than to kneel down in the manner President Trump is suggesting.

Tewari also announced that the Congress party plans to raise this issue in Parliament during the next session. He also questioned the government’s trade negotiations handling and whether the government acts in the interest of the Indian economy.

Trump has been very vocal about India’s trade policies, particularly regarding the country’s tariff environment, ever since he became president. His most recent comments have once again ignited political debate in India, and opposition leaders like Tewari have called for transparency and accountability in the taking of trade decisions that bear a substantial impact on national economic interests.
