Imphal: The Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to bring peace to Manipur after a tribal agitation turned violent. Efforts of these forces have successfully rescued over 4,000 people and given them shelter from the turmoil.

The situation is closely monitored, and more people are being shifted to safer locations. The quick response of the Army and Assam Rifles, along with the state police, managed to quell the violence by morning. Sources reveal that flag marches are being conducted to keep the situation under control.

A peaceful march turned violent in Manipur as clashes broke out between tribal and non-tribal groups. The ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Ace boxer, Mary Kom also tweeted regarding this situation tagging the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to the same. Her tweet said, “My state Manipur is burning, kindly help”.

Despite thousands of agitators participating in the rally, police were forced to fire several rounds of tear gas shells to control the situation. Agitated youths were seen gathering in the Valley, calling for retaliation. Due to these situations, a curfew was also imposed in some districts, including Imphal, Thoubal, and Bishnupur.
