Imphal: On Friday, however, the flood level subsided gradually in Imphal, Manipur, causing rainfall to stop for the sixth consecutive day due to the Remal cyclone. However, officers revealed that as much as their capital city receives such relief, there are still various regions in Manipur experiencing a flood. With cyclone Remal causing widespread flooding in the northernmost part of the state, constant downpours that started Sunday have worsened the situation. Importantly, floods in several rivers that passed through Imphal city in Manipur have risen tremendously; the Nambul River and Imphal River, in particular, have already flooded into several sectors in both Imphal East & West districts.
Authorities say that it has stopped raining since Thursday, and due to the blocking or bypassing of the Imphal River, the situation in the worst flood-prone areas has improved by at least a one-foot drop. The water level has started receding in the Khwairamband market area of Imphal which is the most important market area.
However, the extent of havoc caused by the overflowing Imphal River is clearly evident even near the Raj Bhavan of Imphal, which the governor, Anusuiya Uikey, visited on the weekend morning. To assess and restore the situation, officials and disaster management teams accompanied Uikey toured the affected areas, including the Raj Bhavan secretariat, governor’s office, staff houses, and security parade, all of which were underwater. The governor thus urged immediate measures needed to address this pathetic situation in the Raj Bhavan compound in the middle of the capital.
A CRPF officer posted at the main gate of Raj Bhavan said that the water level inside the campus has threatened to rise to a level of 5.5 feet above the ground level. At the same time, it is continuing with multicar rescue operations in the worst-affected regions, including Khurai Lairikyengbam Leikai, Lapham Khunou of Imphal, and Ngaram Manipur.
