Jiribam: Security forces netted five militants in separate operations in Manipur, where two civilians were found dead in the Jiribam district on Tuesday morning after clashes between militants and forces in the area a day earlier.
The encounter, which happened on Monday, led to the elimination of ten alleged militants who were reportedly coming heavily armed with various sophisticated demand and dressed in camouflage uniforms. They had staged an assault that involved opening fire on a police installation and a CRPF base, while two CRPF personnel were wounded.
The two victims, aged men Laishram Balen and Maibam Kesho, were found dead at the Jakuradhor Karong zone. This area had especially been under attack by the militants, who had gone around burning some of the shops. It remains unclear exactly who shot these two civilians, but both their bodies were retrieved from the debris of the area on Tuesday morning real.
There were also two civilian deaths; six individuals are still missing. There are three women and three children taken by forces during the encounter. The security forces under Operation IGP (Operations) I K Muivah have also embarked on a search mission for the missing persons and officers.
Consequently, the district administration has put a ban on assembly of more than four people in the proscribed area to avoid any outbreak of further violence. Radio news has remained off the air, and a shutdown was observed in the Kuki-Zo majority areas of the hills as people laid down their lives in the gunfight suspected to be the insurgents. The situation in Jiribam was comparatively less grim on Tuesday than on Monday, but it was tense as police personnel continued patrolling to guard vulnerable areas against any trial.
The constant fight between the militants and security forces remains a huge source of a drastic increase in the unrest in Manipur and the possible endangerment of the local people.
