Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari landed himself in controversy after he claimed that Muslim MLAs visit his office to disrespect him in his capacity as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She also targeted opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ‘fake Hinduism’ in West Bengal.

This caused a controversy after Adhikari was reported to have said if the BJP secures power in the state next year, then Muslim MLAs of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal Legislative Assembly would be ‘thrown out’. Mamata Banerjee criticised the remarks as being divisive and unconstitutional.

Banerjee criticised the BJP stance on Hinduism, saying, “The Vedas do not agree with your imported Hindu dharma nor are they (our seers). Then how can you deny their rights as citizens? This is nothing but a fraud. You are importing fake Hinduism.”

Further, she accused the BJP of employing religion for political gains and that its version of ‘Hinduism’ was being used as part of a strategy to induce religious polarization in West Bengal. “I have the right to protect Hindu dharma, but not your concept of it.” She proclaimed that she didn’t want them to play the Hindu card.

Banerjee has always presented herself as a leader for secularism and religious harmony, complaining that she is using the fact that she is fulfilling a Hindu and that she does not support the minorities’ rights. Her last remarks indicate strong resistance to the BJP’s political efforts before the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls.

With such religion creating rhetoric becoming the cliche, the political war in West Bengal is all set to intensify and continue lining up against both the TMC and the BJP.
