West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of instigating violence in Sandeshkhali village, attributing it to their strong presence and citing past riots. Banerjee claimed, “RSS has a base there. Riots took place there 7-8 years back. It is one of the vulnerable riot spots. We handled the situation strongly during Saraswati Puja or else there were other plans.”
Asserting her commitment to justice, Banerjee detailed the actions taken by her administration in response to the unrest in Sandeshkhali. The village has been in turmoil over allegations of sexual harassment and land capture against local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders.
Banerjee, addressing the Bengal assembly, emphasized her opposition to injustice and highlighted the deployment of the state Women’s Commission and administrative officials to the area. Seventeen individuals have been arrested, and a women’s police team is actively engaging with residents to address grievances.
“I have never supported injustice,” stated Banerjee, addressing the ongoing situation. “I sent the state commission and administration there. Seventeen people have been arrested so far…Our women’s team is present there. A women police team is visiting people at their doorsteps to listen to their grievances.”
Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district, has been embroiled in a political storm for nearly a month. The turmoil originated from an Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh’s residence on January 5, investigating a multi-crore ration distribution scam.
Shajahan’s associates obstructed ED officers and assaulted them during the raid, leading to his evasion from authorities. Despite his absence, associates claim he maintains control in the area. Banerjee’s statements highlight the complex socio-political dynamics and the need for ongoing investigations to address the multifaceted issues in Sandeshkhali.
