In his discussion with his Indian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Mohamed Zameer, on Thursday, Moosa talked about President Mohammed Muizzu’s future visit to Delhi. These discussions happened against the backdrop of diplomatic efforts to mend relations between nations. It is the intent of the government to make sure that there will be no recurrence of remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the government said so while addressing those remarks.

Zameer further defended President Muizzu’s decision to prioritize visits to Turkey and China over India following his election victory. He explained that although discussions with New Delhi had taken place regarding the visit to India, it was postponed to accommodate the convenience of both parties.

Mr Zameer revealed to India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar that President Muizzu would be visiting New Delhi shortly, seeking their cooperation on numerous projects. He highlighted the fact that a military pact between the Maldives and China is non-existent. During a public forum, the President even stressed that any foreign military on the territory of the Maldives was off-limits.

The issue of the economic cooperation between Maldives and India was presented by the Jaishankar to Zameer. He sought ways to design a debt relief programme. In Zameer’s remark, the importance of economic cooperation with India in the Maldivian economy was introduced.

Differentiating the government from the remarks means that the election of Zameer had nothing to do with the criticism against Modi. The Muizzu government is to remain neutral in these regards. He waived that the management had done everything possible to avoid a repeat of such tragedies.

Zameer stated, “It’s not the stand of the government or it’s not the view of the government. And we believe it shouldn’t have been done. And then we are taking proper action to make sure that this doesn’t repeat.”
