The police arrested two persons, one of them a TMC activist, on Wednesday after allegedly interrogating him for the murder of Dulal Sarkar, the TMC’s Malda unit’s VP. Among the arrested were TMC’s Englishbazar town unit president Narendranath Tiwari and local criminal Swapan Sharma. Tiwari was arrested after they had interrogated him for 21 hours.
The murder happened on the night of January 2 when Sarkar, 61, a former chairman of the Malda municipality and a businessman, was shot dead by four motorbike riders inside his factory. The attacked factory is situated just a few blocks from his home and the local TMC office, and it boasted security cameras that recorded the incident.
Tiwari, when taken to the Malda court, gave a remark indicating that he was being framed alleging that he was innocent. There are definitely some brains somewhere pulling the strings to this murder.
Before that, five people had been detained in connection with the case. Described by police as dangerous car-jackers, Shami Akhtar and Abdul Gani, frequent visitors to Bihar and allegedly hired as contract killers, were arrested on January 3 along with a native of Englishbazar, Tinku Ghosh. Two other suspects, Amit Rajak and Abhijit Ghosh were nabbed on January 4. The police later put a bounty head on two other accused persons, namely Bablu Yadav and Krishna Rajak alias Rohan, both of Englishbazar.
Englishbazar municipality chairman and also former minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury demanded it to be the result of rivalry between Tiwari and Sarkar after the 2022 municipal elections. He claimed that the supporters of the accused, called Sarkar, had assaulted Tiwari and his men during the elections, and that made Tiwari organize an attack on him.
Chowdhury also narrated Swapan Sharma as a contract killer who is now being tried in another murder case. Reports have emerged that Sharma, out on bail, was hired for the murder of Sarkar. Police in their pursuit are still searching for other suspects who have not been arrested yet.
