On Sunday, which was the last snan parv of the annual Magh Mela, an estimated 10 lakh devotees dipped in the waters at the Sangam ghats, Prayagraj. The Pilgrims was already coming to the banks of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the fabled Saraswati before daybreak, and the shouts of Har Har Mahadev rang loudly on the banks.
One of the greatest turnouts is usually noted in the final day of the month long Magh Mela tradition, and the officials noted that there was no exception this year. Magh Mela officer Rishi Raj said that the stream of the devotees had been continuous since the early morning. It is the final snan parv of the Magh Mela today and people are flocking in high numbers to have a divine dip on Mahashivratri. Approximately 10 lakh of the devotees have bathed at the moment. Proper preparations have been taken, said he.
In order to contain the huge population, police and security agencies had to deploy elaborate security and traffic control strategies in the mela zone. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) mobile patrol units were put into operation and other police officers were positioned on major entry and exit points. The surveillance systems and public announcement networks were also switched-on to control the movement of crowds and overcrowding in ghats.
The authorities reported that special consideration was paid to the safety on the riverbanks, sanitation and accessibility of pilgrims. Emergency response teams and medical teams were put on standby.
Mahashivratri is the focal point of the Magh Mela celebrations and every year people in the country flock Prayagraj in search of ritual bathing and prayers.
