In observance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s death, the Maharashtra government has announced a holiday on Friday, December 6. According to a circular, all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and the surrounding regions will observe Mahaparinirvan Diwas as a local holiday.

However, the BSE and NSE exchanges haven’t released any holiday circulars, so it’s not confirmed if the markets will be closed on December 6.

Special Trains

For Mahaparinirvan Diwas, Central Railway announced the schedule for 14 additional trains. On December 6, these trains will arrive at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus from Aurangabad, Adilabad, Nagpur, and Sholapur.

Swapnil Nila, CPRO Central Railway, further said, “Apart from these trains, 12 additional suburban trains will also be run by the Central Railways, out of which 6 trains will be run on the main line and 6 on the Harbour Line.” “Nearly 300 additional RPF staff has been deployed to ensure the safety of passengers,” he added.

How Mahaparinirvan Diwas will be observed

At Mumbai’s Chaitanyabhoomi in Shivaji Park, where Dr. Ambedkar was cremated, a sizable crowd is anticipated to pay tribute. Baba Saheb Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who was born on April 14, 1891. He fought for the rights of women and workers and fought against societal discrimination against Dalits.

As a prodigious student, he earned doctorates in economics from the University of London and Columbia University. To defend the untouchable community’s right to use the town’s primary water tank for drinking water, Dr. Ambedkar organized a satyagraha in Mahad in 1927.

He was also a part of the seven-member committee that drafted the post-independence Indian Constitution. The highest civilian award in India, the Bharat Ratna, was given to Ambedkar in 1990.
