CMO said 11 people from Bihar have died in the tragic stampede at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh earlier this week. During the Mauni Amavasya festival, a major bathing festival, both the area around the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers, and the GyanVapi Area of the city were crowded with pilgrims. It caused the deaths of at least 30 people and 60 seriously wounded.

Some of the Bihar victims came from different districts of Gopalganj, Aurangabad and Patna, Muzaffarpur, Supaul, Banka and West Champaran. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, deeply moved by the tragedy, expressed his deep condolence with bereaved families and announced an ex gratic payment of ₹2 lakh to the kin of the deceased. The CM also assured that the Chief Minister’s relief fund will give ₹50,000 each to injured victims from Bihar.

A large number of devotees had gathered at the Sangam on Wednesday for a holy dip during the Mauni Amavasya, a major event on the Hindu calendar when the stampede took place. Unfortunately, the situation got out of hand forcing many to make a heavy rush with a spirit of pilgrims resulting to loss of lives. The authorities said they would investigate the cause of the stampede and ensure no such incidents happen in future religious gatherings.

It has also triggered a demand of improved crowd management and safety measures at such events as the Mahakumbh, the authorities and the state continue with their relief work.
