On June 26, the Lok Sabha will elect its Speaker. In a new Lok Sabha, the Speaker is chosen by a simple majority vote. Until the Speaker is elected, a pro-tem Speaker is appointed to temporarily carry out essential functions. The term ‘pro-tem’ indicates that this position is temporary.

“Traditionally the post of pro-tem Speaker is given to the senior most member of Parliament. This is a stop gap arrangement. I think that NDA government should have contemplated this situation because the Parliament is everyone’s,” says JMM leader Supriyo Bhattacharya during a press conference in Ranchi.

The leaders of the Opposition bloc INDIA staged a protest outside the Parliament on Monday amid the oath-taking of newly elected MPs for the 18th Lok Sabha. The leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Sonia Gandhi, and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, were seen holding copies of the Constitution as they protested against the BJP-led NDA government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha on Monday and will be the Leader of the House. The swearing-in of the other Union ministers and newly elected MPs to be members of the Lower House is underway. Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab is administering the oath to the newly elected MPs.

Earlier today, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha
