Leh Ladakh Protest: Four people have died so far in the Gen-Z (students) protest that took place on September 24 in Leh, the capital of Ladakh. More than 70 people are injured. After the violence, social activist Sonam Wangchuck, who was on a hunger strike for the last 15 days, has broken his strike. Meanwhile, the central government has held Sonam Wangchuck responsible for the violence in Leh. The ministry alleged that Wangchuk instigated the crowd by citing ‘Arab Spring’ and ‘Gen Z’ movements. At present, in view of the situation, Section 163 of the BNSS has been implemented in Ladakh and Kargil.

The ministry stated that Sonam Wangchuk began a hunger strike on September 10, even though his demands were already part of the High Powered Committee (HPC) discussions. The government increased the Scheduled Tribe reservation in Ladakh from 45% to 84%, granted one-third reservation to women in councils, and officially recognized the Bhoti and Purgi languages. Recruitment for 1,800 posts also began.

The ministry said the situation was brought under control by 4 p.m. The Home Ministry also accused Wangchuk of breaking his fast and returning to his village amid the violence and failing to calm the situation. The central government stated that it remains fully committed to the aspirations and constitutional rights of Ladakh.

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was on a hunger strike for the last 15 days demanding full statehood for Ladakh and four other demands. On September 24, hundreds of students took to the streets in support of Sonam Wangchuk. Violence broke out when a large number of young protesters gathered at the NDS Memorial Ground in Leh. Some protesters started pelting stones at the BJP office and the Hill Council in Leh. They then set the BJP office on fire. The Home Ministry said that when the situation went out of control, the police had to open fire in self-defense, resulting in the death of four people.
