The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal on Tuesday (August 20, 2024) announced that they would extend support to the Bharat Bandh call given by various organizations on Wednesday (August 21, 2024) in response to the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations. Left parties also backed the call for the strike.
In view of the Bharat Bandh called by SC-ST Samaj and Bhim Army on Wednesday, Bihar Police Headquarters has issued an alert to all districts. The DIG of the special branch of the headquarters has written a letter to all DMs and SPs saying that the organizations have called for a torch procession on August 20 and Bharat Bandh on August 21 in protest against the decision passed regarding the provision of sub-classification of states in the reservation quota received by Scheduled Castes. It cannot be denied that law and order problems may arise due to the participation of a large number of people in this. In view of this, instructions have been given to take the necessary steps.
Decision Of Supreme Court That Lead To Bharat Bandh
While giving its verdict on the creamy layer in SC-ST reservation, the Supreme Court had said, “All SC and ST castes and tribes are not the same class. Some castes may be more backward. For example – sewer cleaners and weavers. Both these castes come under SC, but the people of this caste are more backward than others. For the upliftment of these people, the state governments can sub-classify SC-ST reservation and set a separate quota. Doing so is not against Article 341 of the Constitution.”
Along with the decision to fix quota within quota, the Supreme Court also gave necessary instructions to the states. It said that state governments cannot take this decision arbitrarily. Two conditions will apply in this too.
