New Delhi: The last evacuation flight carrying stranded Indians from Sumy landed in Delhi on Friday morning, officials said. Stranded Indian students were evacuated from the northeastern conflict zone in a convoy of 13 buses by the International Committee of the Red Cross to Poltava on Thursday said a student coordinator. Two Air India flights carrying those evacuated from Sumy landed in Delhi this morning, a source said.
The GoI on Thursday attempted for the second time to evacuate its nationals from Sumy where students waged a doughty battle in bomb shelters and basements in frigid weathers, with bare minimum food and water and other essential supplies as the Russians clobbered the region intensively.
With the last carrier today, GoI winded up its most delicate and challenging evacuation exercise under ‘Operation Ganga’ to help stranded Indians leave from Ukraine. On Monday, Mr Scindia, who was overseeing operations on the ground from Bucharest, tweeted: “Reassuring calls to parents, bright eyes & wide smiles – our last flight back to India is full of cheer, as 155 people on board with us return to their homeland. All set to take off!”
The operation began on February 22nd after Ukraine closed its airspace two days later issuing NATOM. Nations neighbouring Ukraine helped India immensely sheltering those fleeing from war-hit zones and fulfilling basic needs until they boarded flights.
