Wayanad Landslide: A massive landslide struck hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerela’s Wayanad district on Tuesday morning, leaving eight dead and hundreds suspected trapped. Kerela revenue minister K Rajan confirmed that so far eight people have been confirmed dead in landslide that stuck Meppadi, Mundakkai Town and Chooral Mala in Wayanad.
The Kerela State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has deployed Fireforce and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teas to the affected area. Two teams of Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been instructed to move to Wayanad to assist in the rescue efforts, according to a Facebook post by the KSDMA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi grieved the death of victims and offered all possible help to the chief minister of Kerela, Pinarayi Vijayan.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader who recently won his Lok Sabha seat from Wayanad, expressed his condolences over the Wayanad landslide.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a statement issued by his office, said the operations will be coordinated, and state ministers will reach the hilly district to lead the rescue activities. Pinarayi Vijayanadded also said in the wake of the landslides and other rain-related disasters in Wayanad district, the health department – National Health Mission – has opened a control room.
