Lakhwar Electricity Project on Yamuna River Approved by the Union Environment Ministry

New Delhi: A press release by the Uttarakhand CMO (Chief Minister’s Office) on Thursday revealed that the Union Environment Ministry has approved the Lakhwar Electricity Project on the Yamuna River in Uttarakhand.

According to the press release – “Apart from electricity generation, six states will also get irrigation and pure drinking water from this project. Its construction will provide 330 metric cusec meters of additional water.”

The press release added more to its announcement about the Lakhwar Electricity Project, declaring – “Due to this project, Uttarakhand will get 572.54 million units of electricity every year. With this, the availability of water in the Yamuna will also increase”.

It is noteworthy that, the total cost of this long-awaited project stands at Rs. 5747.17 crore. From the entire amount the project needs, 90 percent will be donated by the central government.

The Centre has decided to give its donation keeping an eye on the drinking water and irrigation arrangements that are associated with this project. The rest of the 10 percent amount will be shared by 6 states that will be benefitted from the project.

The states that will be monetarily involved in the project and later get benefitted, are Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Haryana will donate Rs.123.29 crores, while Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand will pay 86.75 crores each.

The state of Rajasthan will pay 24.08 crores to the project, while Delhi and Himachal Pradesh will pay 15.58 crores and 8.13 crores respectively.
