Comedian Kunal Kamra on Wednesday apologized to a Mumbai banker who had to cut short his vacation as the police summoned him as a witness in a defamation case against the comedian. Kamra expressed regret that he caused inconvenience to the banker and that he would sponsor the banker’s next holiday anywhere in India.

“I am deeply sorry that it has made you inconvenienced by having to attend my show.” In his apology, Kamra said he had asked to be ‘scheduled your next vacation anywhere you’d want in India.’

A 46-year-old resident of Navi Mumbai, the banker had planned a 17-day trip to Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where he was to return on the 6th of April. But he was compelled to put a truncated end to his trip and return on Monday after being constantly called and a message received from the Mumbai Police. Police officials doubted his claim that he was based out of town and even warned him against visiting his residence in Kharghar. Fearing the warnings, he decided to return early to beat the summons.

“On March 21, I left Mumbai, and I was supposed to return on April 6. In Tamil Nadu, it was I who kept calling the police again and again. When contacted, the officer also first (doubted) my claim of being out of town and (threatened) to visit my home in Kharghar.” The banker said that this left him with no choice but to cut his trip short and return immediately.

Kunal Kamra defamation case against him was derived from a joke told at one of his audio performances, which apparently prompted the banker to be called in as a witness. Discussion sparked by Kamra’s response focused on the ramifications and effect of legal proceedings on individuals going to watch comedy shows.
