There are emerging human rights issues, especially concerning the informal sector workers and the people who have lost their homes due to any climate crises and this is brought about by the rapid changes in technology and the environment as former President Ram Nath Kovind said on Thursday. Speaking at the 32 nd anniversary of the establishment of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi, Kovind noted that even though India has achieved a lot in upholding human rights, new weaknesses require immediate and concerted action.

He pointed out that in so many cases, the workers in the informal sector deal with unsafe working conditions, erratic earnings, and lack of social protection and argued that the growth in the economy should not be at the cost of human dignity. Kovind urged higher protection to migrants and other displaced populations, where the right to access basic human rights could not be limited simply because they were undocumented. Migration and displacement, whether brought about by strife, natural catastrophes or economic hardship pose questions of human dignity that are very deep. All people have a right to identity, security and to access of the essential services and this is what he said as part of the effort by NHRC to provide these protections always.

Climate change is another urgent human rights issue that the former President signaled the need to acknowledge it affects human livelihoods, their safety, and dignity. Also, he proposed mental health to be seen as a basic human right, which needs more awareness and the elimination of social stigma. He said that NHRC advisories that encourage accessible and community-based mental health care are progressive moves.

At the same time, when a National Conference on the Human Rights of Prison Inmates was held, Kovind emphasized the importance of treating detainees in humane environments, so any violence or abuse should be condemned. He called on prison management to turn prisons into institutions of reformation, rehabilitation, and hope with the view of rejoining the inmates into the society as responsible and decent members of the society.
