On Monday, July 8, South Calcutta Law College reopened after being closed almost two weeks ago with a gruesome episode when a first-year student got allegedly gang raped on the campus. The college had been closed since June 29 in the wake of the widespread furore over the June 25 incident.
The college authorities, as told, are the ones who asked only the BA-LLB students to attend on the first day of reopening, who had not availed the facility to fill the examination form earlier in the other semester. The examination to be conducted in the first semester shall start on July 16, and the students have to undergo their registration procedure, said one of the college authorities.
The victim, who was aged 24 years, had gone to the college on June 25 at 12:05 PM in response to a notice released by the college, which asked students to fill examination forms on that day, June 25, and the following day, June 26, between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM. When the formalities were over, she is said to have gone to the union room, where the accused lured her to go to the guard room. She was even dropped on her knees and allegedly was gang raped by 3 people; a former student, a temporary college employee and a college student. The case is said to have taken place outside the formal college time.
The three accused were arrested promptly, together with one of the security guards suspected of being on the wrong side of the law. The guard room and the union room have been cordoned off since and are still sealed.
New regulations that have been set in place in the college are limiting gate access without an identification number and other forms of strict enforcement of security on the campus. LLM students’ classes are scheduled to resume on Tuesday.
This scandalous case has given rise to discussions of campus safety and the role of educational establishments in providing a safe environment for learners. The authorities have also vowed to bring on board additional preventative measures in consultation with law enforcement agencies.
