Kolkata: A Sealdah trial court slammed the hospital authorities and the Kolkata police during the probe in the RG Kar rape and murder case verdict on Monday. Justice Anirban Das, while pronouncing the judgement, disparaged efforts by the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and its former principal, Sandeep Ghosh, to cover up the death of the victim as suicide to escape the legal wrath.

Speaking of the case, Judge Das pointed out that there were attempts made to disguise the manner of the victim’s death as a suicide to allow the hospital officials to avoid responsibility. He pointed out that the efforts to control the story or to impose some story were observable throughout the case files. The judge applauded the junior doctors against this cover-up, who went on to protest and present a memorandum to the principal, as a result of which the authorities had to budge. However, he said that he was frustrated at the slow response from the police and the hospital and said that the delay disrupted the family, who was not even allowed to see their daughter.

The court also took time to ask several questions about the involvement of Kolkata Police during the early period of the probe and the specific acts of some officers that contributed to the poor handling of the case. In his submission, Judge Das noted that such failures eroded the credibility of the investigation and prolonged justice.

The judge said that the overall conduct of the RG Kar hospital authorities was unacceptable and an attempt to betray the public’s trust. The judgment is a sharp wake for medical and law enforcement institutions to ensure they uphold the truth and reopen cases, even if it means dealing with institutions that would rather keep their secrets than get justice. This case has elicited quite a lot of anger and demands for more reckoning for institutions that deal with delicate issues.
