A special letter sent by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanded that the government disclose their specific plan for carrying out an inclusive caste-based population survey. The introduction of such a policy should not stir division because it represents an essential strategy for obtaining actual economic justice and social equity.

Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge pointed out that India displays unity and strength especially during emergencies when he talked about how Indians unified after the Pahalgam terrorist attack. He emphasized that our nation along with our people remain totally united during times of difficulty because our society demonstrates great open-mindedness towards everyone.

According to the Congress leader a caste count is necessary to achieve the constitutional promise of equal status alongside opportunity for every citizen as mentioned in the Preamble. He requested constitutional reforms to eliminate the “arbitrary fifty percent limit for reservations so governors could devise modern affirmative action measures that respond effectively to changing societal conditions.

The Congress Working Committee approved the Telangana caste survey approach at its April 2 meeting before it pressed the central government to implement a similar approach. The committee requested both allocated funds and a precise execution schedule for the caste census.

Kharge criticized the BJP due to its previous stance against the demand pointing out the central leadership of Modi had long mocked Congress for making this request. During his recent comments you accepted that this request serves vital purposes for deep social justice and social empowerment according to Kharge. Kehar asked why the recent decision made by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs regarding caste inclusion in census 2021 remains unclear.
